COST Action participants from the Portuguese R&D community joined representatives of national research organisations, policy makers and industry at an informal lunch with the European Commissioner for Research and Innovation, Carlos Moedas, to discuss the need to support open and bottom-up networking and to highlight some success stories of the COST networks.
Portugal – a founding member of COST since 1971 – is part of the European Commission’s Spreading Excellence and Widening participation policy. For many years now, researchers in Portugal have been strengthening their international networks by participating in COST Actions in parallel with the enormous growth of their national research system.
The initiative aimed to spark a discussion about the importance of open and bottom-up networking opportunities in the next Framework Programme for Research and Innovation and beyond. The event offered an informal, open space for exchange for decision makers to meet researchers from the Portuguese community and learn how participating in COST Actions has helped their research and career develop. Discussions will also focus on ideas that could help the funding programme improve in order to achieve its vision of becoming the networking tool for Europe’s researchers.
